Magnecorder Pt 6 questions
Hey all! I've had a couple of these Magnecorder Pt-6j preamp/power amp
things sitting around for a while, and was wondering if folks have had any luck using just the pre/amp units (without the tape drive units attached)
as stand-alone cleanish mic pres? Heard of any cool mods? I've used them plenty for guitar into cabinets, vocals through cabinets (think distorted Sonics/Stooges),but am curious if anyone has had anyluck making them "hifi"?

I am sure there are others modding these but I may be the person you've heard of with the specific Pre+Limiter mod. I install a one-bottle mic preamp AND a Federal AM-864/U in one unit using the original iron and an added interstage transformer. Much like the UAudio 6176 you can use the circuits separately or patch them together and use as one big circuit. I just posted a blog entry about Magnecorders on my project page today:

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
