Minimalist Project Tascam 388 done - Audio Sample
Here's a (short, 20 second) sample of what we did Sunday with a 57 on the drums and another on a guitar. No outboard effects, no preamps other than what's on the Tascam. Dbx off for the drums, recorded hot. Dbx on for guitar. This is a very rough mix down just for the sake of having a sample to critique.
What might you add, suggest, change? Just looking for general feedback. The tone is precisely what I wanted - lo fi, dark.

The guitar rig is a Silvertone Twin Twelve recorded wet - reverb and delay.
The 57 was placed about four feet from the kit to the drummers front and left, about three feet high, looking between the snare and the kick.
The mic placement was the most educational thing about the exercise. Not until Sunday did I realize how much a good sound depended on mic placement because never before Sunday had I tried or been part of a recording that had only one mic on the drums. So I took about an hour and a half trying many different spots for it until I found someplace that showed me an accurate picture of the entire kit. And I'm really surprised at what kind of sound I could get from one 57 and no preamp (other than the 388's), no compression...nothing but the kit, the player, and the room.
I actually had another mic on the kit but it's not in this mix. I couldn't find a place for it but will no doubt put another mixdown together with that incorporated.

Is there a preferred clip upload site tapeop users use? Every site requires a different plugin.

I LOVE it. The guitar sounds is just awesome, and those drums are perfect. I just did a one-mic drum thing (mine was with an SDC) last week to get a demo drum part down to go with a guitar part, and I was so happy with the sound, and I like your example even better. The kick specifically, perfect. I'm considering doing my next album with just one mic on the drums for the whole album. Not set on it yet but good god I love that sound so much.

Thanks. That little encouragement goes a long way and I'm hopeful every track turns out as good.jgimbel wrote:I LOVE it. The guitar sounds is just awesome, and those drums are perfect. I'm totally into this type of sound. Very cool guitar tone. I'm a huge Black Keys fan, especially the latest record. All you need are some killer vocals and you got a good thang!jrdamien wrote:Here's a (short, 20 second) sample of what we did Sunday with a 57 on the drums and another on a guitar. I like it. Has an early White Stripes sound to it. I would be curious to experiment more with different mics such as a 421, maybe outboard pres. I love my 388s, don't get to use them enough. When I do my "solo" record it will be on a 388 for sure. I had really great drum sounds on a 4 mic setup with it (kick, snare top/bottom, and mono overhead).
As much as people in their mom's basement on Gearslutz dog the 1/4' 8 track 7.5 ips format...there is a surprising amount of fidelity to be had that exceed expectations.
