reel to reel is unbalanced, microphones are, now what?

do I need to know anything about going from RCA to TRS/XLR? any special things I should do besides just make 1 and 3 share the RCA sleeve?

i think #'s 4, 6 or 17 is where you want to look for wiring depending on the pin out.

I was lookin at that, but I've also heard that one might want a transformer somewhere in there like in the second diagram from the top on the rane page - overkill?

The input on the tape deck are line level. You need a mic pre with a line out, or a console of some sort.

Just because something has an XLR input, that doesn't mean it can take mic level.
