M88s on floor toms (or rack toms, or snares) work really well.JohnDavisNYC wrote:i almost always use the oktavas, but on a session last week (in between construction days) i used a beyer m88 on floor tom and it was amazing. i want to get another one and try them on toms... definitely more of a 70's vibe than the oktavas. and super tight rejection.

A studio I've done a number of projects in lately has a pair each of Audix D2's D4's. Really liking them on toms quite a bit. One project I did there has, IMHO, the best tom sound I've ever captured. The fact that it was a great drummer on a well-tuned kit with new heads didn't hurt, but the Audixi captured them well. Love the D2/D4 on congas as well. In a pinch, the D4 makes a pretty decent kick mic, had to use it when our normal kick mic failed on a session, and it was good enough.

For me it's nothing out of the ordinary.... boring........... 421 and yep 57... I have no trouble with 57's on all toms and snare.
Sounds lame but I have had good sounds out of some Thomann cheap mics...

You cannot get any better than these if you are on a super cheap budget for kick and toms. Surprisingly usuable. (ugly though, lol)

If dynamic: MD421 or SM57
If condenser: 414's. I love them on toms. Especially if they have the Audio Upgrades modifications.
I think U87s sound good on toms if you like them to have a lot of mid-range smack. If you find yourself boosting 4K-6K on toms, you'll probably like U87s. Just make sure you have a good drummer (or the micas aren't yours!) because they could get whacked.
Other fun options are Electro-Voice RE15's and AKG D19's. Both have shot up in price lately.
You could also try and track down an old Shure UniDyne III SM57. They sound a little different from the new SM57's. Finding one in good working condition is another story.
Also, try removing the transformer from a SM57. Just to zap it with phantom power if you do so.

I have heard the EV Cardinals on toms and they sounded great. I bet the Blue Ravens sound good. It's hard to go wrong with Electro Voice.vapour trail wrote:a pleasant surprise to me were the Blue Ravens.
