Beyerdynamic M160 on KICK
Beyerdynamic M160 on KICK
Was reading about Joe Barresi recording for Queens of the Stoneage:
"On kick drum I always love a mic in and out. Inside I prefer the Sennheiser MD421 ? I'm not a huge D112 fan. If the 421 doesn't work, the next choice would be a [Shure] Beta 52. Outside could be anything, an NS10 speaker, a 47 FET, or a Beyer 160, about three feet away."
Has anyone tried this - a 421 inside and a Beyer 160 outside? I am really intrigured by the Beyer 160 in general; wondering what to expect, and how this combination will work.

M160 is my new favorite mic for non-vocal things. A friend used his as overheads, and they gave his recording the exact blend of '70s R&B and modern indie that the band (our mutual friends) needed (when paired with all the right elements, of course - room, kit setup, player, preamp...).
Long story short, they weren't dark, but they weren't bright either. Mellow, dry, and focused. Not as much detail as the CAD M179s tried in the same position, but the quality of the detail suited the recording.

its between an m160, ns10 speaker or D12 for my for a second kick mic. i would def use the m160 for other applications as well, so thats a front runner, though if the 421 doesn't get enough low end, and the 160 wont make up for it, it may make more sense to pair the 421 with a ns10 subkick or D12. thoughts on that?

I like the M160 as overhead so much I've never tried it on kick, but I imagine it would be awesome in the above described method, as the way it picks up kick even from the overhead position seems very smooth and right for lack of a better word.
Don't forget to add the castle w/ stairwell.
