I'm looking to put together two channels. Pre, Comp... Neve, API, Helios, UA?
I have a few bucks to spend and I thought now might be a good time to put something together. I'm into old school tones. What would you suggest? I've been out of the loop when it comes to gear so. Should I buy a pair of 1073s or something comparable. What are they going for now? 1176? HELP!!!

There's no way we can really help without some idea of a budget. But if you're not comfortable with the differences between classic pieces you prob shouldn't just go out and buy one. I suggest finding ways to try various things, preferably in your own recording setup.

Hi,
One word :
CONTEXT.
Your post is way too vague.
Cheers

Looks to me like it's time to start working on your lunchbox. Get a six spacer and then you can mix and match pre/eq/comp from the many offerings until you get it dialed in.

Buy the preamps that were used on your favourite records. Canvassing opinions from folks who may or may not share your basic tastes in music is a mostly pointless exercise...
