electric pulse in the recording

Post by lee » Tue Oct 11, 2011 10:20 pm

Hi everyone,

quick question, I used my friend's ZOOM recorder, the little H1 model, in my most recent project. I used it for a stereo room mic to capture the guitar and vocals. The thing is, on some of the ZOOM tracks I'm getting this low-end pulse at a constant -36 dB. So I'm looking for a way clean up the signal. I used an expander, but I can't get enough of the pulse out of the track without taking a lot of the music with it. So pretty much what I'm asking is this, is this pulse a common problem with recording engineers (bad power supply), and if so, is there a better fix than expansion?

That's it. Thanks.

What kind of a pulse is it? Can you post a clip so we can hear what's going on?

Okay, it took me forever, but here's a link to the sample.

Hi,

This sounds mechanical in nature to my ears, from the example provided.

Since you mention this "pulse" only occurring some of the time, I might suspect a device that turns on in the room or near the room you are recording in. An A/C unit, refridgerator, or other machine like a washing machine might be the culprit here.

If you can, try to pay very close attention for some time in the room where you did the recordings, to try to really listen intently and see if you can hear this sound again. If so, then it is a sound emanating from a machine close by, and can be dealt with by turning that machine off.

Cheers

is there any part of the file where there's just the electrical pulse and no music? if so you can try using various noise reduction tools. if you don't have any, send me one track and i'll see if i can do it here for you.

Sure, that would be awesome. Do you have an email where I can send it?
