Fulltone Tape Echo in Mix "Re-Amp?"
Going to have one of these in for a mix coming up, and would normally assume that it would require a Re-Amping device to match impedance. Has anyone been able to do this without the reamp process?
I've noticed some pedals/devices actually do ok without. Like I have a Moogerfooger LPF that does ok without.
Thanks

Reamping is better in my opinion. I've tried it both ways with an Echoplex EP4. There haven't been any instances yet where I've preferred not using a reamp when interfacing low Z stuff with high Z.
For anyone's reference who hasn't seen this before, go here:

JT-11P-1 Balanced Line Level to Unbalanced Guitar Level (9KB PDF)
I built one with a Cinemag transformer and it works perfectly.
You can probably get away with it without using a reamp. But a reamp box is one of the most useful things ever to have in a studio.

They are nice to have around, I only have one at the moment and it pretty much lives connected to my EH memory man. It will most likely be used in the same mix on guitar, I think I would use the tape delay for vocals.honkyjonk wrote:Reamping is better in my opinion. I've tried it both ways with an Echoplex EP4. Last year I built a box with six channels of Reamp and six DIs all based on the JLM audio dingo jr boards. All of our tape delays now go through it, including a TTE, and there's definitely a significant improvement in the sound.
There's no reason not to use the TTE on its own, but if you have the option I highly suggest going the Reamp/DI route.

Reamp is nice. That's what I use when I have the TTE on hand.
One thing about the TTE that I get on loan from time to time, is that it's finicky with grounding. The lift on the reamp is handy for that. Also, being able to adjust the level from the reamp is handy, though you could just use an aux in PT for that I suppose.

I run the O.G. Reamp with the Fulltone often while mixing. Since it's an instrument level device I've never attempted to run line level through it. I can say that it sounds great with instrument level in, then echo going back into a DI. For me has always been one of those things that "mixes itself". In my music it kinda can almost never be too loud or too quiet, it always just sounds right. I'm a fan of it.

The fulltone being a modernized EP-2, I can report that the EP-2 is surprisingly flexible with reamp/impedance matching or not. The timbre is different either way, but both are good, matter of taste. Definitely needs level boost back in - a regular channel input on my soundtracs seems to do just fine on that even without a DI for impedance change. In other words, I've found both i and o to be flexible. YMMV.

I use a TTE all the time. You can pipe in full console-type levels and trim with the record level pot. I frequently use the TTE to process sounds back into Pro Tools as well as more typical delays. I pipe the output to the front DI of a preamp in most cases, as it is a low signal.
