"Inductor Dope"?

Post by floid » Fri Oct 21, 2011 9:15 am

i'm trying my hand at an old 40s era project i ran across, and it requires you to wind your own inductor - i'm clear on everything except "Inductor Dope," which they claim can be had at any electronics shop...

I recall that "dope" was a substance used in making dirigibles...they smeared it all over the Hindenburg, for example.

Something like wax or epoxy... like potting pickups, most likely. Keep the windings from vibrating.

Where'd you find this project, if you don't mind my asking? It sounds interesting

The red stuff is called Q dope. Get it from Fry's. I prefer polystyrene dope myself. It's used to secure windings on coils and to insulate high impedance nodes like condenser mic capsule connections, etc.

is this the poly dope you're referring to, Jim?
So, when using this stuff, i just do my coil and then brush a layer on? Any advice for securing the winding until everything sets up?
AndyHutchinson, this is the joint: http://www.tubebooks.org/technical_books_online.htm
