2 Track AD/DA Converter for Transferring Analog Mixes

Post by mikoo69 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 7:23 am

I am looking for a 2 track AD/DA converter to transfer 2 track analog mixes to the computer. I would like to spend under $1000. I don't really need preamps, however something like the Apogee Duet, which has preamps is enticing so I could double as a portable 2 track recording system as well, when I just want to demo ideas straight to my computer in different locations. Would the Duet work well as a 2 track converter for the analog mixes? Any other recommendations around this price range? I would like something that allows me to connect monitors so that I can monitor off the computer as well.

Thanks!

I'm a fan of the Sound Devices USBPre2.

Looks great. How does it compare to the Apogee Duet 2? I can find Apogee Duets (1 not 2) used for pretty cheap.

On the whole, how does this hold up to a more expensive unit that just specialized in A/D such as the BLA Sparrow or a strict A/D converter around $1000

I like it. It has detail. I have a Lynx II soundcard in my studio DAW for comparison. The USBpre2 has many I/O options. The other unit I would consider is the Lynx Hilo.

a +1 on the USBPre 2. I have the earlier version, & it has good conversion & good mic pres. The new version has many advantages: better metering, the aforementioned I/O options, & it can be used as a standalone converter if you have a USB power supply.

I think the Duet is nice as well--I have a friend who has one & it serves him quite well. But I think the ruggedness and versatility of the USBPre 2 put it a step or two above the Duet.

It may not be worth the extra expense for you, depending on your needs, but it's definitely worthy of your consideration.

You can pick up an apogee PSX100 for pretty cheap these days. Goes up to 96k. 2ch In/Out, solid clock if you add other gear in the future. And most of all sounds pretty good. Though, i haven't used the A/D that much, but I can vouch for the D/A.

Jim, would you expound on this please? When I click the TI link it takes me to info about the chip but what about the actual device side of things?

Thanks.

Ack! I hate to hijack/digress, but Jim, do you mod digital interfaces?

If you do, do you think the Echo Audiofire Pre 8 would be worth upgrading? Not the pres, i don't use those, just A/D, D/A section. I actually think it sounds ok, but i know i really need better, i just don't have the dough for a Lynx or something right now...

thanks.

Most of those arn't worth bothering with as they use low end converter chips.

For me it's the BB PCM/DSD4222 ADC and the BB PCM/DSD1792A DAC.

If you find those parts, then it's worth rebuilding the analog designs.

The PCM4222EVM is a sale item on the TI web site, as Ye Shall Seek, Ye Shall Find.

Doesn't do word-clock sync, which some people might find useful.

the Duet really is an elegant addition to any mac, integrates so nicely with the system audio. nice to have a big volume control sitting on the desk.

That can be fudged if you are clever. In a 2 track mixdown or transfer, it should not be needed. I have found no other better converter chipset, it's just like what the analog console sounds like after conversion.

To obtain the best in class ADC for under a hundred and fifty bucks is a gift.
