grossest, dirtiest, noisiest cheap preamp.
I am in the process of getting a handful of things for the studio and I am getting some nice things and acceptable things, but I want something so gross it makes you want to puke when you hear it. Just to balance out everything else we have been putting together.
I am looking for distorted vocals, trashy drums, bass di that sounds like garbage, that kind of thing.
Give me a few ideas!

I had some pre-sonus bluetube pre-amps a while back and if you overloaded them they for sure sounded like ass.
My all time fav trashy sound would be playing a cd of the track back on a low powered boom box as loud as it goes. Then mic it with a u47.....

Yeah yeah, anything with a glowing "fake" tube that you can see!
Especially if it has it's own knob to turn up the "tubey-ness"!
or
Record stuff into old cheap Karoke machines using their own mics (vomit inducing). Then playback and mic the speaker.
Not that I've ever done that with a full rock band (in realtime) or anything.....
or
An old 90's Peavey 12-16 ch. mixer. The "flat" thin looking black ones.
Ram stuff into the channels and crank up the faders. Use as guitar preamp or bass DI for lotsa suck.
The mix buss gives out *way* early on those (big understatement!)....and it sounds pretty nauseating.
Lotsa hiss too...
In fact, it's the worst thing I remember from those days.
Yuck....found out it was the Unity 2000. I was trying to block it out I guess.
Catphish - "Is it any good? My band needs a mixer for recording (mostly live) and running our P.A. and monitors. Two guitars, bass and drums, and everyone sings. So we need a minimum of 12 inputs.
I've found a few of the 16 channel Unity peavey mixers for pretty cheap, but I can't find any reviews or information on them. Has anyone here tried one?"
Soundman - "I would suggest moving up to the RQ2318 (http://www.peavey.com/products/shop_onl ... e/3/rq.cfm) . I designed the RQ2318, and am very familiar with the Unity that it replaced. The 2318 is worlds better than the Unity in every aspect."
Har har. Well, the RQ2318 sucks too:
"I have a RQ2314, same thing fewer channels. I use it for live work a lot & I like it for that. I didn't like it in the studio at all. The preamps are nothing special although not horrid. It has an audible hum. The bus routing is not flexible like on a Mackie."
But not as bad as a Unity I bet. Those are special.

these are my favorites:
1) chandler tube driver with contour and bias controls. line and instrument ins and outs.
2) revox a77. cool pre's.
3) shure sm48
4) bank of isolation transformers
-but if you really need to purge the bile-
[drumroll on a '60s 'crest' branded 14" snare with original heads]
5) the mighty dbx 266 compressor

When I first saw this thread I almost posted about the VTB-1. I've got two. But honestly, I don't think it's shitty, even when maxed out. Overdriven, fuzzed out, yeah, but in really beautiful way. Like running vocals through a distortion pedal, but it reacts in a relatively smooth fuzzed out way.vvv wrote:I really like a VTB1 maxed out with the mic right at my face.
It's almost pretty in its shitty.
We used a 635a into a VTB-1 that wasn't quite maxed out but leaning that way on this (and the whole EP):

I believe there was no EQ used on the final track whatsoever, it just sounded right (just some slapback). Adding distortion afterward instead just wasn't right.
So I guess if you're looking for actual shitty, or shitty in an awesome way shitty!
