My pal bought a soundcard yesterday. He said the Guitar Center rep recommended against an M-Audio unit because "their customer service is so bad."
Bwahahahaha.
Bwahahahaha.

a typical guitar center interaction:
SalesBro: you know there's no returns on this, right?
me: it says RIGHT ON YOUR FUCKING RECEIPT that i have 30 days to return it.
SalesBro: oh, yeah, ah, um, uh.....so, uh, um, ah, er, what drummers do you like?
me: just ring me up already.
they're the only music retailer left in boston. it sucks.

I liked the guy I had last time I was in. He seemed like a real musician who knew his shit and didn't feel the need to piss on people's heads and tell them it was raining.
I had a weird interaction with another dude though. He was "helping" another customer and he asked my guy if they had any of "those things with the lights that go up and down with the music?" I just blurted out "you mean a spectrum analyzer?" and he said "No. It's not that." and my sales guy said "No. He's right. That is what it's called." and rolled his eyes at me in sympathy.
Why do those guys have to contradict you when they don't even know whether you're right or wrong? It's just a reflex or something.

I actually do a lot of shopping at GC. I have a couple of cool guys there that I work with regularly. One is a bit higher-up in mngmnt. and says that "Things have really changed" in a negative way, as far as quality of staff, customer service, and from the GC workers' point-of-view, the increasingly corporatized "Walmart" culture has taken away some of the nice bennies that used to attract cool people to work there-- much lower commissions, and things like tour-leave being seriously curtailed (which used to be a given; they _wanted_ to attract working pros to be at the store when they were off the road).
I know I got pretty upset when, after spending literally thousands and thousands of dollars at GC, we were turned down for any kind of help when we asked, regarding a benefit for a gravely ill friend...
But what are you gonna do? Like Walmart, they have the gear you want, and (for now), at a price you can afford.
(sigh)

I am qualm-less when it comes to marching right into Guitar Center, head held high, and buying something I need.
I love it that there's a place where you can find ANYTHING sitting right there on the shelf, calling out to you. Got some great deals on second-hand gear too.
But let's get one thing straight-- it's not at all like Walmart... more like Home Depot...
