Patchbay question--wiring outs to multiple points

Post by kakumei47 » Tue Dec 20, 2011 10:03 am

I'm trying to work out an efficient layout and wiring plan for the patchbays on my MCI528c.

My question is about eq/preamps with mic and line in. I have several that I use for both the pre and the eq (tracking and mixing). Obviously I could put the output either with the other preamps or with the other eqs. But what if I wanted to have both wired up so it would be visually and functionally obvious (i.e. outputs in both the preamp out and eq areas of the bay)? How would you wire that up (would I just daisy chain them or is there a special way to do a mult in this situation)?

I'm only talking about 8 channels at this point, and I have a lot of extra patchbay space so losing those points is not an issue. Just wondering if there is a "best" way to do this or if this is a bad idea for some other reason...

Hi,

As an example, here is one channel, laid out on my patchbay:

(Top row)======
Misc gear outputs, keyboards, etc...

Line inputs of console
============
Insert SEND
(Full normall)
Insert return
============
Direct Outputs
(Full normall)
ProTools inputs

For the ProTools Outputs it is all the same, except the outputs of the first
row are the PT outputs, and the Direct outputs do not feed the PT inputs.

I also have on the pTchbay, all the monitoring oututs, group outputs,
And main outputd, as well as their respective Insert points.

It over 144 patch points, but worth having infront of me, saving lots of time wiring stuff.

Cheers
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Thanks for the info! My board came wired with a bunch of inserts and has this kind of flow (I don't have the mic pre bay option so all that is separate):

Console mic pre out

patch out (pre/post eq selectable)
patch in

channel out
tape inputs (to auroras in my setup)

tape outputs (from auroras)
Line inputs

That's the setup for each channel as-is, which is pretty decent. But what I meant was for outboard preamps/eq, not the console pre/eq. I am planning to do the rest of my outboard like this in the two mostly empty bays i have (all not normalled):

outboard preamps 1-12 out________________eq inputs
outboard preamps 13-24 out_______________eq outputs

compressors input________________________reverb/delay inputs
compressors output_______________________reverb/delay outputs

So for mic pre/eq units, I'd ideally want the outputs BOTH in the outboard preamp section and the eq output section.

Since nothing's normalled a simple Y cable will work. You probably wont be actually loading both at the same time, but even if you were there shouldn't be much trouble unless the two inputs are vastly different in-Z or extremely low.

Be careful with the inputs, though. The ART pres a I have will pump the line/instrument in through the mic input! Kinda scary when you hear your bass or guitar coming from the diaphragm of the mic you forgot to unplug. :(
