What Did You Work on Today? 1-8-12

Sunday, so not much work-related. I glued some little plastic bits I fabricated to the actual broken keys from my Yamaha CS-5, which seems to have gone well. Went to the coffee shop and wrassled with a CAD program I'm learning.

In an hour I'm going to see a cello duo concert in a rehabbed barn; totally acoustic in a big room with lots of wood and big beams.

OK, I was wrong, I did work even though it's Sunday... I forgot that I did some file
back-up and archiving last night, and more today. Also did some prep work on part 1 of the upcoming mike shoot-out (drums and percussion).

Gort Vs Goom convened, and we were strategizeing our world takeover plans. It only sounded like we were playing Fun House for an hour.

Then home to do box builds on a stack of SSSS EQs, and sunday dinner with the wife.

One feature film dialogue and all assoc'd with that, prepping for FX and foley,
One original soundtrack music for a training film for fedex, not that canned shit,
One drummer's record,
recording more music.

Tracking a keeper vocal with the band is a close second on my list of favourite ways to work. It takes a bit more set up time but saves hours and hours down the road and 99% of the time the vocal ends up much, much better.

Worked on getting Reaper set up so I can control it from my iPad. I mainly record myself, so I'll be able to stop, rewind, delete or save a take, switch tracks, and start recording again without getting up, taking off headphones, and walking into the next room (fan noise isolation) to work on the computer. It should really help keep the flow going.

i worked on fuck-all yesterday. hung out with my lady, had breakfast about 3pm, read a couple hundred pages of "Shakey". which i highly recommend, great book.

Recovering from a bad back and consecutive nights out seeing music (lead singer of legendary garage band the Monks, and the 7th annual reenactment of the movie The Last Waltz). It's an embarrasment of riches here in (no so frosty this year) MN.

Ordered Avantone Mixcube (active single for mono-mixing), read a ton of Mike Senior's Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio, put up some new treatment in my space, rewired some racks, made some pig-tails for vintage compressors that a friend is lending me, shipped some gear that I sold. Whew!

Yes, THE Gary Burger. He played 1 new song (at the end), and ripped through the rest of the Monks set with a great local garage band backing him up. His guitar playing was as good as anyone I've seen the last couple of years. His voice sounded great (better than the Star Tribune critic would have you believe).
