FMR RNP Gain Pot Repair

Post by iamthecosmos » Thu Jan 12, 2012 3:53 am

I idiotically managed to snap the gain knob off channel A on my RNP, does anyone know if this would be feasible to replace and could perhaps suggest a suitable part? I'd really like to get this fixed without it making the round trip to Austin and back!

If you're ok with some solder rework, it's eminently fixable.

But I've got no idea what the part is.

The most likely source would be to call FMR and see if you can get a spare. Call them and ask - they're great people.

Not sure what the part is either, but the gain control on the RNP is some kind of 12-position rotary switch (not sure how many poles) with a skinny shaft.

Agree that FMR is probably the best source--likely not an off-the-shelf part.

I bet if you hit them up, they'll send you one. They're great people!

I emailed FMR last thursday and I'm stil waiting on a reply, is that normal?

Also, if anyone has a clue about a similar part I might just give that a try. At least I have one channel working for kick drum!

I did the same thing to my RNP. I took it to FMR (I'm in Austin) and they fixed it for $20. They're super great folks.

As far as not getting a response right away, I wouldn't worry for now. There aren't a lot of people over there, and sometimes they seem to be in an "all hands on deck" production phase, and I think they're getting ready to move, so they may be a little slow to respond.

Try calling them. I know someone who called them casually, and wound up talking for an hour.

Very friendly people.

As far as recommendations for a replacement part, a picture would be worth a thousand words.

Affirmative on the "give 'em a call" approach. You are far more likely to make contact quickly that way than via email.

Giving them a call was definitely the way to go! Very helpful and will be sending the RNP off for repair (20$ repair, $10 for the part + shipping either way). Slow on the email but great company on the phone. Going to have to wait another week to send the RNP though, another preamp just died and I need a decent bass DI!

A larger company could have someone dedicated to dealing with email. That's not FMR. Everyone at hand is involved directly in production, testing, and shipping, and when possible, design. So while an email may languish in their inbox, when you phone they answer.

Think how many companies will have a bot answer email with a boilerplate reply, but not pick up the phone. <g>

BTW, I picked up their new(ish) PBC-6A, and I love it.
