Desert Island Instrument or Production Device...

Post by Gregg Juke » Mon Jan 16, 2012 9:23 pm

Inspired by a thread at another site about microphones, recent events in leisure-cruising news, and old episodes of Gilligan's Island--
What would your D.I. pick be? With all of my instruments and gear, I'm thinking mine might just be my Korg Kaossilator. Haven't gotten bored with it in a year and a half of regular/constant use, and have used it on some serious productions, belying the "it's only a toy" myth. It has great potential for the electronic music enthusiast, but it's also simply outrageous fun.

I do have my eye on that new Monotribe, though...

My Swiss Army Knife.

Then, I could make instruments with whatever available materials were on this desert island.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

A decent generator and lots of fuel. Otherwise, it's back to coconuts.

Beyerdynamic m160/m130 M-S set.

I can seriously do anything with those two mics.

THAT IS NOT an instrument or a production device! You've gone too far, Wilson! Next thing you know, you'll be seeing hearts with wings on everything...

By the way, Gilligan, those tiki torches must be kept lit. Those seeds must be kept warm!

My list is small and relatively inexpensive...

Some solar panels and a voltage invertor/convertor, whatever it's called.
macbook pro and a uad solo card. Reaper and Abelton Live.
RME UFX
AKG 701 or 702 phones (mixing), Remote Audio HN7506 phones (tracking)
A pair of line audio CM3s.
A pair of Avenson STO-2s
Either an AEA R84, or a Cloud JRS34
Shure SM78 or EVRE20
Some dead kittens (not real kittens, those furry things that go over mics)
some cables, don't need stands because i could use sticks and twine made from coconut fiber.

I think that's it mostly, a tent made from bat skins or palm fronds that i could use to shield my macbook from the harsh sunlight (so i could see to mix).

Desert Isalnd? One of those carbon-fiber acoustic guitars and the mostest-heaviest-coated elixir strings. It would sound like shit, but if I'm stuck on an island forever it might entertain me for a few years .

Recording stuff, which I guess is the real question here... When I'm going away for a week to do some writing or want to leave a small rig at girlfriend's house or something like that, I take a pair of Oktava 012's with large-diaphragm and a couple patterns of small-diaphragm capsules, an RE20, and a cheap pedal board with an Electo Harnomix mic pre and black finger compressor. With that stuff, I feel like I could record anything competently.I'd have another EH mic pre for stereo, but for stereo pairs I'll usually just use the built-in pre's in the interface.

Oh, and referring to the OP, I picked up a korg monotron recently. Great stupid little synth, also does cool stuff. Not desert island for me, too limited in scope. But good cheap fun.

Hey Standup,

Yeah, I've got the Monotron, which is neat-o, but have you seen/heard the Monotribe? Check it out; looks quite exciting.
