Pro Tools 10 HD

Post by Nick Sevilla » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:26 am

I just got the update to Pro Tools 10 HD.

This week I'll post reports on the difference between it and 9.

Cheers

OK,

So far: Using PT HD 10.0.1 update.

Auto Tune latest version DOES NOT WORK. TDM 7.1.0 and RTAS 7.1.0

Waves Tune latest version does. 8.0. whatever last digit from last week.

Also, it seems to work better than 9.0.6 which was the previous version I had on here.

Less random freezes, crashing, etc. I was experiencing about 1-2 freezes or crashes per week, during heavy use. No more.

I have not really used any of the "new" features, mostly I like the RAM caching of ALL THE AUDIO in RAM.

Makes for instant playback, instead of that horrid waiting for the playback to start sometimes several seconds after pressing play.

Cheers

Nice feature:

Upload To SoundCloud

I just used it and it worked.

Pro Tools even gives you the weblink when it's done uploading, and THAT works as well.

Darn, this is cool... will save a ton of time when sending mp3's for evaluation purposes.

Now, to figure out what mp3 or other encoder is used when using this feature...

Cheers

Cool. Thank you. please keep updating. Do you happen to know if there will be anymore updates to PT 9 or is 9.06 the last of it?

I have no idea.

I know the last version of HD that sure ports the current hardware is 10.

I do. It have the new HDX cards (yet) because I would also need to get a new computer for those.

Awesome to hear Pro Tools finally works as it should under normal, daily, commercial-use conditions.

Soundcloud, really?

I know Soundcloud lets you upload .wav files, so it may not be an mp3.

Not to get into a religious conflict, but at my studio, PT has been working just fine under normal daily commercial-use conditions for close to ten years now.

Hi Broshark,

Are you using Pro Tools HD, or the lite version?

Because of all the major DAWs, PT HD has always been the most stable.

And yes, SoundCloud. Really.

I'll be working in a room that has HD 10 pretty soon.
random freezes, crashing, etc. I was experiencing about 1-2 freezes or crashes per week, during heavy use.
Counting you and another engineer I met recently, that's two reports I heard of those issues in HD 9 (which I have not used). I tend to be overly cynical but it's like, come on.
that horrid waiting for the playback to start sometimes several seconds after pressing play
That IS something I've experienced in both PT 8 and 9. (non HD)

The issues quoted above are the cause of my snarkiness.

Anyway Nick, glad to hear you're enjoying working in HD10. I (sincerely) hope things continue to go well. You seem like a nice dude and all.

Another update:

Pro Tools HD 10.0.1
UAD2 Quad Satellite processor running software ver. 6.1
It works, and accurately compensates for the latency of these plug ins.

Note: Pro Tools HD 10.0.1 is for use with the older, non HDX Processor cards from Avid/Digidesign brands. Mine is an HD2, meaning one core card and one Accel card.

New feature that I used extensively today: Clip Gain.

This is a mini fader control that changes the gain of a region (now named Clip), and is totally independent of the volume automation of the track.
I had to process the different levels of two persons in a monaurally recorded interview. Setting my initial clip gain to -3.6 dB, allowed me to go throught the 50 minute interview, editing as I went, and raising the level of the softer talker to 0dB by option clicking on the mini fader icon on the region. This kept me from having to continually go back and forth between the volume and region(clip) view, which I had to do before. Useful New Tool!

Clip Gain was a great enhancement. Glad to see it.

I have an HDX card. I am using HD 10.1 like I am supposed to. Using a MADI I/O to the Euphonix console. This week I finally got it up and running with a new mac (12 core). My HDX and MADI IO keep losing sync. It is all clocked via an Apogee Big Ben fed via Rosendahl Nanosyncs. I have done the usual stuff but seems a bit glitchy.

I love the speed of the system. Moved up from 8 HD but have 9 non HD. 9 works super well with my laptop but need to move to 10 because of the PTX file format. I hate doing Save as etc...

I hope they have an update soon. A friend of mine had the same problem with 10HD for the old cards and with the 10.01 cs update he has not had the sync issues. So hoping for 10.1.1.

Mike

PS clip based gain rules. Also Ram Cache is great. I love making an edit and having it play it right away.

Hi Mike,
And that is why I am witing for the bugs to get fixed. Since it is new hardware, it will be awhile before this happens.
My PTHD 10.0.1 with the old Accel cards runs really well.
The only thing I am getting more of, is some RAM.

When I got the new system I did not realize that it would take so long to support the HDX card. I still have the old one on PT8hd for now if I have something critical. But I can be a beta tester for now.
