Sharing files with clients - Alternatives to iDisk

Post by chris harris » Mon Mar 19, 2012 1:33 pm

iDisk is going away. It's super frustrating because iDisk works exactly how I want it to and it was quite affordable.

I'm looking for a way to share files with clients. I want something with a web-based interface that doesn't require installing any software to use the way I want to use it. I need lots of storage, and compatibility with large files sizes (up to 1gb would be enough). I'd like to be able to upload a file, generate a link, and send the link to a client, so that they can download the file. For client submissions, I'd like to be able to direct them to a webpage with an "Upload" link that will allow them to upload their files to whatever folder I've selected. I'd like the ability to password protect these processes.

I don't mind paying.

Is there something that offers all of the functionality I'm looking for?

Dropbox might be worth checking into. i don't use it's full capabilities so im not sure if it meets all you're requirements but i've liked it so far.

I've used Dropbox and that works fine. I've also used iFileit but I like Dropbox better. There is also Skydrive That is connected to Hotmail that is ok. I think it holds up to 25gb.

I've been using Sendspace.com for the last few years with no problem. It $6.95 a month and easy to manage. Dropbox, wetransfer and ftp are also decent options.

I use :

Dropbox
YouSendIt
My own server (sux, because it's old school naming conventions)

And I have the "iCloud" although I am stupefied as to how to login there now.
ver snce the Apple Corps threatened extinction of the iDisk, and then said any iDisk user would transfer for free, then x, y, z gossip on the 'net, I will wait before using it again.

Cheers

iCloud is a huge step backwards from MobileMe/iDisk. You really can't share files unless they're docs created in iWork, Office, or PDF files.
I've settled on You Send It Pro for work stuff.
Thanks everyone.

Another vote for dropbox, I use it all the time for sharing mixes.

I've been using wetransfer a lot lately, it's cool: 2gig limit, free, pretty pictures.

I'd had the paid-for yousendit, it's good when you need those features.

i use www.wetransfer.com it has a 2 gig limit, and, you get a download confirmation whenever the client downloads what you've set them. i also use www.dropbox.com both are free and do what i expect them to do.

best,

I use my own web/ftp site or skydrive. you do get 25GB on skydrive (for free) but there is a 100MB file size limit so you may have to zip (good idea anyway) or break up larger files (winzip, winrar, and others can do this for you too).

I've bee using Dropbox a lot recently, and it works just fine. For those of you who are big Google fans, they just unleashed Google Drive, like, today.

It's a lot like a cross between Dropbox and Google Docs, and they start you off with 5GB storage as opposed to Dropbox's 2GB.

I've recently started using SkyDrive from Microsoft. It seems to have many of the features you're looking for, but here's a link with more info http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/skydrive/compare

I think they may be in the middle of updating/changing the service: When I signed up a few weeks ago they offered 25gb free space but the chart above says 7gb...when I just logged in now it offered a "free upgrade for existing members from 7gb to 25gb"...go figure.

Hope this helps!
