I love my Oktava MK319, which is very similar to the 219. Stock I still thought it was a cool mic, but I did some mods the headbasket and to the body. I also removed the resonator disk on the capsule, and damn I love that mic! It actually made it a little dark removing the resonator disk but it really smooths out transients and bright sources. Almost ribbon like.A.David.MacKinnon wrote:[
Oktava MK219 (modded)
The Oktava MK219 is quite dark for a condenser but it works really well on all kinds of voices without getting peaky or sibilant.

I have over a dozen MCA SP-1 mics I bought for $39 each. They have modified electronics and are fitted with various capsules, stock, c-12, k-47, k-7, k-67.
Each are different and all sound wonderful. They now cost $49 each, or 2 for $89. The capsules run $99 to $120 each.

For about the price of one mid level mic, I have over a dozen of very fine mics to use. It's remarkable considering my first quality pair of mics were AKG dynamics I paid $89 a piece for in 1970. I didn't get a good condenser until 1978, an AKG 451. If I had this low cost chi-com stuff back then...

I have a modded MCA SP1 and a 2006 modded both, one had a small capsule and I just took it and swapped it with a modded 319 and they both sound great now.
All my modded 319's sound great, all my modded 012's sound great, my M500 is always a winner, old modded V67G is a winner, The shining star is the modded Oktava 2500 that the mic and the PS are modded and it sound awesome as hell. Sounds like a 49 now. KILLER room mic with NO EQ AT ALL.
Harumph!

SE-1000-has this harmonic distortion thing that I like on some sources. Good on some guitars.
SM57-It works, dont laugh! A vocal will not be easily buried if recorded with a 57/58.
GT52-on darker voices that need a little lift, great. On brassy or shrill voices it is awful. Took me a while to admit its terrible as an OH, but great on bass guitar.
Oktava MC012-from about 2 feet away is amazing. the only thing I dont like these on is kick drum.
Beyer M69-has this scooped mid that really works on some voices. Like mine.

I just rec'd a SM7b ( I wanna claim I borrowed it, with my IRS $ ) and used it (transparent pre and compressor, no EQ at all; note CAD M149 on BV's is the same settings) here on lead vocals. Damn sweet! My fave has been the MD421n, and this is both "faster" and "cleaner/clearer", IMO.
I also "borry'd" a M500, I'll get to, soon.
On the look-out for a Shiny Box ...
