I unsuccessfully tried to repair a Slimair 636, but you may find this slideshow informative/interesting ...

Yeah, it's hard to repair the charred remains of a cosmonaut who entered the earth's atmosphere without his heat shield up and somehow got inside your microphone. Did you try WD-40?

No, would that have got that tar out?

The black, burnt looking thang is apparently a transformer, what was mounted in about 1" of tar. 8 wires went in offa the switch, and 3 came out to the capsule. Thru the tar and running along the side of the barrel was a 1/4" metal tube. Between the tar (in the first 1/4 of the barrel) and the capsule was some fiberglass held in place by paper discs.

It was like this:

capsule<---barrel-tar/transfomer/tar-hinge-switch-connector

If I ever get around to it, I'm gonna try and hook up the capsule straight to the 4-pin Amphenol. I may try putting a SM57 trans in if necessary ...

WD-40 may clean some of it. A lot of that stuff is animal based and gets real gummy. Cameras from the era are a nightmare. The light blocking foam is made from the same stuff, and nothing I have tried will cut it.

The transformer may still be good, I would take a low range ohm meter and check each wire, maybe the goop didn't eat into the insulation for the windings. You may also be able to peel the first layer off the winding cover and check the connections between the wire and the copper inside, that is where they fail quite often. (Only if the ohm meter finds an open)

Unfortunately, I pretty much destroyed the transformer taking it outta there.

That tar is worse than anything ever formed inside a bong, lemme telly, altho' curiously almost odor-free. But sticky? Butt-sticky.

When I rec'd the mic from offa E-bay it didn't work. I advised the seller and he immediately refunded the purchase price (US$ 15 or so). That was smart because I still hadda eat the $15 shipping, what I woulda asked for if there was any dialogue.

But for $15 I got the cord, and what's left of the mic, what was an education, anyway.

I'll report back if I can get it working.

I was thinking transexuals. Lots of things can go wrong down there.

But I just had to laugh

Wow, that's pretty knarley, vvv! But, ya gotta wonder what the BoD at EV were thinking when they designed this thing:

"It needs to provoke sexual arousal for both the performer and the audience. What would Marilyn Monroe want in a microphone? Or Connie Francis...Annette Funicello...Moms Mabellie (roar of laughter). Phillys Diller (big laughs). . . . .Danny Kaye! (uncontrllable laughter for close to seven minuets). Oh yeah, and it needs to be imperivious to shocks and...VIBRATIONS!!! " The office jokes lasted all the way thru the early 80's I'm sure.

Thanx.

Y'know, I bought another and took delivery two weeks ago, sold as "working".

I didn't.

I made the guy refund my money (US$27) and all the shipping, both ways (US$12 each way), before I returned it.

I shan't bid for another on the E-bog.

Heheh - true dat!

Sorry 'bout that last e-buy. Why can't ppl just be up front about their wares? Stupid! OT: Still trying to find purpose for my 664. It's okay, just no real  . Am kinda grinnin' over my 630 tho. Almost has a ribbon warmth/fuzz about it. Different animal I know, but the elements are close IIRC.
