How many mic's is too many mic's?

Post by vvv » Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:13 pm

5, 10, 50, a hunnert?

Or izzit when you start trying to have pairs of the same that it's yer clue to addiction?

Is the purchase of Hi-Z mic's indicative of obsession?

How about when ya buy old Court Reporter mic's, even if they are Sony and Beyer?

I kinda thought it was cool that you were starting to get some pairs o' mics. I'm a big fan of stereo. I got the two ears, see?

no shame in the purchase of hi-Z mics.
PRS used to plug a mic into a guitar amp that was positioned on another guitar amp. You need a hi-Z mic to do that.

Buying mics can be a bit of an addiction...

...building them is even worse. Not even sure how many I've got lying around here anymore. At least thirty or forty.

I'm at over 60 mics.

And this is only because I mainly mix albums now...

:)

Interesting ...

Anyone tried this?

Reminds me some of, say, The Strokes micin' the vocals through an amp; here yer micin' a amp thru an amp, if I understand correctly.

And oh yeah, just scored a EV 631 (adjustable hi-Z and lo-z, I believe, with a "shaker" switch) for US$49 shipped.

Multing a vocal through an amp/THD hotplate/lineout/ampsim or eq isn't bad to dirty things up with some gain and tube reverb...

Why more mics than you need? Because then you can leave some up with the second or third drumset in the corner while you mic something else. Besides, many mics will make you look important....

not possible to own too many mics

definitely possible to use too many mics

though if anyone ever has a problem paying bills or taking care of their family because they need another mic, they don't need any more mics.
the tape is rolling, the ones and zeros are... um... ones and zeroing.
