Altec 633 salt shaker clip/mounting options
trying to figure out the best way to get more useability out of my Altec salt shaker. it no longer has the stand mount / swivel attachment - as I acquired it, it's just the body of the mic with an XLR cable coming out the bottom, where the mount used to attach. it's too wide for any shockmount I've tried, and gaffer-taping it to stands & drum hardware is certainly less than ideal. any suggestions? I'll probably have to rig up something with elastic bands......

I was just looking at buying one earlier today in a local store (they had two without the yokes); seems to me with the XLR socketed and in the mic in the clamp it would hold at the jack point.
In the alternative, consider like a woodworker's finishing A-clamp, one of those rubber-coated things.

yeah, the connection at the cable is too narrow to support the weight of the entire mic, with that universal clip.
those clamps might be perfect. one with about 3" of clearance to hold the mic body, the clamp itself attached to a standard clip somehow. or the universal clip, if it would hold. gotta research that one....

no problem, I appreciate the responses. mine has no trace of that original swivel mount, just a hole in the bottom of the mic with the XLR cable protruding. it'll have to be something that supports the body of the mic, and all the modern shockmounts are too narrow. hardware store might be the fix for this.

I would be willing to bet that there's some kind of inexpensive shock mount that will work. I found one a few years ago that perfectly fits my RCA BK5a, which the CBC modified by taking the yolk mount pegs off of the mic. The BK5a is not a huge mic, so I'm pretty sure that that same shockmount would fit the 633. I don't know for certain. but I'm thinking that shockmount was for an MXL mic or something like that.

Re: Altec 633 salt shaker clip/mounting options
Greetings,
I have a similar predicament with an Altec Saltshaker won off eBay. Nothing for a clip to grab onto. So, as a quick fix for the session that night (possibly a longtime temporary fix...), was some adaptation and electrical tape.
I took one of the many generic mic clips that are lying around (for SM57, SM58, etc.), and clipped off the sides that wrap around the mic with some pliers, leaving a "cradle" so to speak attached to the swivel/mic stand end. Then, set the mic in the "cradle" and carefully wrapped a crap-ton of electrical tape around the mic and the mic clip, maintaining tension on the tape, criss-crossing, etc., keeping it as neat as the job would allow. Attached it to a mic stand and voila, ready for the snare (or what have you). Mind you, it's not clean and professional, but it has been working nicely.
Does yrs still have the threaded end attached to the body where the swivel mount would attach to the mic? Mine does, and the future fix will be to thread the end of a pipe that matches the diameter of the female mount for the swivel mount (does that make sense at all?). Thread the XLR cable though the pipe and screw the pipe into the female mount socket. The spring mic clip should work fine holding the pipe end.
Rock.

right on. thanks for checking, Chris.
dAve, that's similar to what I'd been doing, with a broken standard Shure clip & a ton of gaffer tape. it just didn't work so hot for odd positionings that weren't level, like most snare micing. after a while the weight of the mic would pull it out of position.

Ahhh. There you are. Something for me to look forward to. Apologies for making that assumption. I should know by now that Tape Op-ers reach for the gaffer/duct/electrical tape first, and ask questions later.
Meanwhile, I foresee an AT 4047 shock mount added to the wish list.
