Recording with the Akai X-1810

Post by darkmatter » Mon May 07, 2012 2:50 pm

Hello all,
I recently acquired an Akai X-1810 reel to reel and I have some questions on how to record on it.

1. It has two sets of inputs. RCAs on the back and 1/4" on the front. Which is better to record with?

2. Also is it possible to run vocals and guitar through the machine to color the signal before I go into my MBOX Pro interface for pro tools? If I record onto tape first then go to pro tools would that sound better? Which way provides the most coloration?

Any advice is welcome as I am new to using a reel to reel.
Thanks!

the 1/4" on those comsumer hifi was intended for hi-z microphones. They usually are the wrong impedance to sound any good on -10 or +4 line level, and most sound kinda ratty on guitar level.
I'd go with the RCA.
