New MacBook Pro.... the "skinny" edition.
I just ordered the new MacBook Pro, "skinny edition".
Maybe not the best choice for audio production, but my needs are light for this rig.
Now, the waiting game....

I'm desperate to upgrade my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro (3.1), mainly because I've no idea if it will run Mountain Lion, but the new retina MBP is ludicrously expensive. I'd need the 512GB drive, but the only option for me is to buy the top end MBP to get it rather than upgrade the lower spec model. In the UK that's ?2299 without Applecare! Just insanely expensive.
I guess I'll have to hope I can run Mountain Lion (any help on this would be appreciated) and wait and see what the next MBP refresh brings. I'd quite happily fork out around ?1500, but I'd need a hell of a windfall to justify over two grand on a laptop.

Gosh... why would you spend all that $$$$ on a non-musical "toy", when instead you could have this:Jim Rosebrook wrote:I just ordered the new MacBook Pro, "skinny edition".

Got my shipping notice from Apple... Should be delivered next Monday.... In the meantime, I received a 2TB USB3 External HD today to prep for the transition...
This will ease the fact that I'll have less onboard storage. My current MBP has a 125GB SSD + 750GB HDD... lots of room. BUT the soon-to-arrive MBP only has a 256GB SSD...
I think I'll manage.....

The new laptops looks awesome, but boo to this. Apparently there won't be much, if any, ability to upgrade them after initial purchase unless you're going through Apple.

It delivered to about an hour ago, and I'm too busy to open it.... crap!
Of course you are thinking... jeez, you're posting to Tape Op, so you must have some time.
Nope.
THis post is just a quick side trip to a bunch of communication catch-ups I have to do..
And you can not rush the experience of opening a new Apple product of this caliber.
You need to properly pace the flow of sensations as you "open the kimono".... Ha!

Yeah. It's the cost of making it so small. Or perhaps the cost of built in obsolescence, I forget which.SoulOfJonas wrote:The new laptops looks awesome, but boo to this. Apparently there won't be much, if any, ability to upgrade them after initial purchase unless you're going through Apple.

I always get Applecare, especially since my current MBP has steadily been repaired until the only original part is the lower half of the casing! If I picked up the retina model the constant terror of breaking it would through the roof, especially after 3 years. Not been able to upgrade the RAM or SSD after purchase is a shocker as well, definitely going to wait and see what the next upgrade cycle brings before I get a new Mac.
