I really want that drum placement robot. But, I'd like one on wheels, so that the effective "distance" range is improved. And, since it's 2012, I'd like it to be wirelessly controllable via an iPhone or iPad app. Having the camera integrated (instead of a separate piece of hardware) would also be nice.

Surely in a world where people pay hundreds of dollars for mic stands, this is a product that people would be into!

 The drum placement robot is fucking awesome. That would have saved my ass (or ears) so many times. Seriously, that it genius.

You no longer need an assistant to move mics OR run back and forth testing a ton of different positions which takes forever.

The drumbrella thing is amazing. One was installed at Jingletown Recording early this year.

these guys from panda studios in California are apparently developing a mic placement robot to sell and distribute themselves.

I'm definitely interested in buying one seeing as how I wouldn't even know where to begin on diying this thing myself.

I'm so excited that someone is making these things. It's been a dream of mine for years. Now I don't have to do it myself! Thank you world!

I built a mic placement robot a few years ago that was basically an arm and it even rotated. But was too weak to raise the mic up above a certain height.

This might be a good time to go back to the drawing board. The designs I see there are rather cumbersome for the typical home studio but perfect for a pro environment. I'm glad someone's doing this.

I am working through some electronics books now. This would be the second thing I build I think.

I think the difficulties here are mostly mechanical, not electronic.

It might be worth looking at some diy cnc machines for inspiration. In some ways, the goals are similar.

Yes and that is good because I am more mechanically inclined than electrically at this point. I agree that wireless is the way to go though.

What price range would you guys consider reasonable?

I know that ideally it would do everything and then clean the toilets, but what are the "must have" features? Assuming it would need to be able to move in and out, would you need side-to-side and up-and-down, or just one or the other? Would it need to pivot (to get an off axis response), and, if so, side-to-side and up-and-down or one or the other?

So, if it could do in-out, left-right (or up-down), and horizontally pivot 45 degrees to either side, all with wireless control for $1000, is that reasonable?

When I saw that someone opted for side to side instead of up and down (or both) I was a little flummoxed. Isn't up/down, and tilt, more important, especially for an amp on the floor, considering floor reflections?

I think up down and left right would be much more important than horizontal pivoting. Generally seems like I most always have a mic either on axis or off axis based on what I am going for and I just need to find the sweet spot on the amp, which could be left, right, up or down - but I rarely change the angle of the mic at the same time. Could just be me.
