superb looking tascam 388

Post by reel_to_real » Sun Aug 12, 2012 9:30 am

Hi,

I need to test if a Tascam 388 works
I was told by the seller to put brand new tape on it
I haven't got any brand new tape on 7" reels

Does it matter what type of tape i get? I'm thinking tape levels...

You need to buy a reel of RMGI LPR-35 1/4" 1800' tape. Comes on a 7" reel.
You can find it at www.usrecordingmedia.com or www.fullcompass.com.

I've just started looking for that tape, it seems the 911 stuff is easier to get hold of for me. Would that be ok?

RMGI 911 is ok to use, the tape is thicker than LPR-35 and a little harder for the machine to pull.

I wouldn't make a habit out of it, but yes it will work to establish "testing" the machine. Reportedly it is hard on the motor/etc...you want thinner tape like LPR-35.

Hi,

I've got hold of a new reel of RMGI LPR 35 1/4". It's 3608' rather than 1800', will it be ok putting it on the 388?

You need a 7" reel not a 10.5" reel

Hi,

It's a 7" reel and there's 3608' of tape on it. In the manual it reads not to use other than 1800' in length or the Load Function won't work properly. So i'm hesitant to put this reel on and test the machine. I suspect it won't really matter, can anyone help me regarding this?

Check this pdf:
http://www.rmgi-usa.com/resources/Analo ... LPR_35.pdf
Please refer to page 4 of the .pdf file.
You need RMGI product code 34511 to use on the 388.
If you have a RMGI LPR-35 reel with 3608' of tape, you have either product code 34512 or 35520, which refers to 10.5 plastic or metal reels, or 35530, which is a pancake reel hub w/out flanges.

Hi, thanks for all the input. The reel that i have measures 7" in diameter, it's a hinged box and i think it's a plastic reel. I'm confused

Confused? Me too. Maybe you should post a link to some digital pics of the tape that you have.

That is beyond weird. 7" trident reel, 3608' of tape & 34512 marked on the box that should be a 10.5" NAB reel per RMGI's own specs.

I think they goofed, you have #34511 tape with 1800' on the 7" reel. Go ahead and use it, I'm sure that it's fine.

Thanks for your help, as you say a misprint/goof seems the most logical explanation
