Yamaha THR10 Desktop Amp

A friend of mine bought this thing and I had a chance to play through it last night. I have to say, I was mighty impressed. I'm a tube amp geek and this thing sounds like a tube amp. FX are killer, too. All in all this is a great little tool for the studio for $300. Check out the video in the link above.

If you had anything less than a 3k post count I'd call you a spammer. (J/K)

But seriously, is there a video where you can hear the damn thing? I tried 3-4 videos and they just talked about it, they'd do a J cut in the video every time one the guys would crank up the volume knob and start playing. I know the videos won't do the audio justice, but still, talking about amp tone is like dancing about architecture. To paraphrase Thelonius Monk (arguably).

Thelonius Monk?

I thoght it was David "more songs about buildings and food" Byrne ...

Really.

And I saw a ad for that amp and thought it look interesting until I realized it's hybrid (IMO not totally bad as I like my Musicman HD130), digital (IMO, pretty bad) and has "New Extended Stereo Technology" what reminds me of the reverb settings on my cheap bookshelf stereo.

However, +1 on the honesty re the "Virtual Tube Illumination".

I heard that quote first from my jazz teacher (Yusef Lateef) in college (1987) who said he heard it directly from Thelonius Monk. Doesn't mean Mr. Monk wasn't quoting David Byrne to Yusef, but I'm skeptical.

(A David Byrne tune just popped up on my Shuffled playlist. I guess that's a vote for him then, from the gods of pseudorandomness.)

Sounds more like a frank Zappa quote to me. The amp.... Interesting, probably built better than many of the cheap low watt tube amps flooding the market right now.

I'll check for some decent videos. That one is junk, I'll admit.

It's the kind of small amp that is perfect for rehearsing, recording, etc. It sounds really great!

Does it use the same "technology" as those ubiquitous Bose countertop hi-fi systems? The Yamaha hype has some stuff about "extended stereo technology".

The "simulated tube glow" earns an automatic 10 point deduction.

I bet it would be nice to have one of these around though.
