how would you arrange these mics?
hi,
i could use a little advice on a drum miking scheme:
in addition to the usual close snare, kick, and tom mics, i want to aim a tube ldc at the kick from a few (3, 4?) feet away. i would like to place a ribbon mic at around the same distance, but as a mono overhead. to avoid phase problems, what should i do?
i guess the choices are:
1. at the same height as the 47 but not aimed downwards
2. higher than the 47 but equidistant to the kick (or the snare?)
3. something even smarter that i don't know about, but you do
obviously, i'm going to listen and try to put it where it sounds best, but it's cool to at least start with a strategy.
thanks!

you could put the LCD about 6 feet on front of the kit, low to the ground. great kick sound you can blend in as room mic. then you can put the ribbon on a taller boom stand, the move it around until you get a good sound and the phase is in relative alignment. if you have a little phasy-ness you can pan them away from each other to even things out. just be aware that on mono playback sources phase issues can return.

Depending on the distance of certain elements something will ALWAYS be out of phase.
So, what can you live with?
Figure out what can be and hen you can scoot what you want to be the main in phase thing into correct phase with whatever you?ve determined is the most important element for it to be in phase with.

First determine which mic you want to be louder in the mix. Take that mic a place it where it sounds best. Take a piece of string and tape to the top of the kick drum. Measure with the string how far away from the kick the first mic is you placed. Now either mark the string with a marker or just cut it from the spool at the desired distance. Next take the other mic and place it (in your case either overhead or infront of the kit) and use the string to make sure they are the same distance away from the sound. Since the mic capsules will be pointing different directions it is almost guaranteed you will need to flip the phase of one of them. Hopefully this helps!
