Because ears are gear, and because science is awesome:

In the Jan. 10 issue of Neuron, Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School researchers demonstrate for the first time that hair cells can be regenerated in an adult mammalian ear by using a drug to stimulate resident cells to become new hair cells, resulting in partial recovery of hearing in mouse ears damaged by noise trauma. This finding holds great potential for future therapeutic application that may someday reverse deafness in humans.

jeez I would love to get back the hearing I had when I was younger. Before I ever started playing drums or bass in loud punk rock bands, or before I started going to loud hardcore, punk and metal shows.
I swear I used to hear harmonics in door squeaks and other mundane objects that I do not anymore.
That and in bird songs I used to hear many more frequencies.
I'm sure I miss some upper high end when I listen to musical instruments as well, but they don't go nearly as high as birds and the aforementioned metal hinges.

I just assumed that we had better hinges now than in my youth, and that the birds were just more into abbreviating these days, just like everyone else. OMGWTF?!
No, but seriously, I hadn't even noticed that stuff going away, but now that you point it out.... I can still often tell if there's a CRT on in the room from the high-pitched sound they emit that it seems most people can't hear. Although I get fewer opportunities to showcase that ability by the second.
