What'ssss a matter wif ssssssssibilansssssssssssssss?

Just used a Beta 58 the other day for a lead vocal (here). Every time, it surprises me what a nice vocal sound I get, no artifacts, none of that ssss stuff, and I just use a bit of pass-filter. If I had just one dynamic vocal mic that had to be flexible, this is a candidate, mebbe only beat by the 421.

Mebbe.

They shall undoubtedly become a "summer alternatve", also, when the AC is necessary.
I used the rk-12 as I wanted a C-12 clone. I have enough SS k-47 mics here, those are my least used capsules as most of the time I don't want a 3~5k hz lift.

Here in Carlsbad, it's always 65~75 degrees, year round. Great for tape storage. I don't own an air conditioner, not needed here.

Thanx!

(Chicago weather has been odd the last year or two, but we often see 5 or so 100f+ days with high humidity, and many in the 90's. My AC is often used starting in May/June - when the furnace isn't - and pretty much full time in July/August, then part-time thru September. October can be quite warm, also, but usually has low humidity.)

Weather has been swinging here this winter. Usually it's steady but we've had 3 cold snaps followed by 80 degree days. I mark it a warm day by whether I can feel the heat from the tube in the 460.

Hi Jim, you do mods on the 535, right? How does the modded compare with the unmodded?

I stopped doing AKG mods a couple of years ago. If you search around maybe you can find a used one.

I actually have one and would like to try modding it. Since you are no longer doing the AKG mods, would you mind sharing the details of it with me?

@Jim: I guess your silence means 'No'. How about doing a one-off mod for me then? Please PM me if necessary.

Beta 58 is cool, but I havent had to much luck as a hand held mic. Too many plosives. It needs a pop filter or one of those foam windscreen things. Tonally though, they sound pretty good.

I never used it as a handheld; being a bassist/guitarist, mine is always mounted.

Lately, and just based upon my use, it's been the Luna, the Spark, the SM7B (foam off), or the KSM27 for lead vocals, and a PL5 or 635a or RE320 for BV's.

Altho' today I used a MD421n for lead, and a M500 for BV's (here, and I also tried the 163X into a VLA2 trick and liked it.)

MXL V67M on the cheap, works great in a pinch, sounds EXCELLENT on certain voices and a near-perfect BK vox mic for nearly everyone. Also does great on tambourine and hand percussion! Not too shabby for like $50.

Gefell UM70 with a MV692 body if I'm not buying ;)

Beyerdynamic Mics.

For hiphop work and higher pitched male vox I've had good luck with Beyerdynamic MC840s. They're clean and not hyped on the top end (extremely smooth top) and are depthy sounding. For some singing styles it doest work though (think crooner). They're also very good OH mics.

Beyerdynamic MC740s are dirtier and brighter and more forward sounding MC840s. They have a transformer in them (unlike the MC840s) and the capsules backplate spacing is different (which makes it brighter). I've had a couple really good vocs cut with these on mellow acoustic singer songwriters.

Their capsules however are smaller than the typical LDC, so they dont do the big lush thing some LDCs can do.

Beyer M88s have been used for vocals by some well known artists.

People you there use Beyer M160s for vox too.

The M500 I referenced?

Beyer - it's one of those odd corrugated ribbon things. I think Eric Ambel posted about how good they are, and I saw a decent price on the e-Bog ...

Very cool, very smooth, no peaks at all, to my ears, but not having any of the typical Chinese-ribbon low-end.

Don't know this guy, no affiliation, but there's a M500 for sale here, here.

EDIT: Ooops! Appears the seller is unavailable until September ...
