Dynamic mic junkie
So, I'm a dynamic mic junkie, I'm afraid. I love my old Sennheisers and even old funky EVs and odd AKGs from the 70s and 80s. I got rid of an EV 660 a few years back and still miss it. I've had D19s, RE11s, and all sorts of old Shure dynamics. Currently rebuilding an MD 409U3 which is an awesome mic. I even like my EV Raven. That thing rocks and I got it on a blowout deal for $49!! I loved my SM7 but made a trade deal with it awhile back and really wish I hadn't now. Any others I should look for? I'd love to have a 666 or something like that. I particularly like large diaphragm dynamics, but I have love for all really. I do have and like condensers as well but I'm just a sucker for a good dynamic mic. Anyone else feeling the love?

- Beyer M88 or any other Beyer (I have yet to find a bad one)
- EV 664, 636, 666, RE-anything, PL-anything
- Sen 411, 421, 441
- AKG - anything from the 60's or 70's is worth looking at. If you can find a functional one the D224 is one of the best dynamic mics ever made. Flat and condenser like.
- Once you've worked your way through the usual suspects you can start getting into fun things like Altec Saltshakers, CB mics, Shure/EV omni reporter mics, weird East German RFT mics and just about anything else.
I tend to think that any mic is good for something, you just have to figure out what that something is.

Yes!
Re the SM7, I had read that the Peavey 520i was very similar. I finally got one for a reasonable price and actually find it like a brighter SM7b, and very complimentary for less than 1/2 the price.
I've never used an RE20, but do like the RE320 for vox and bass. The MD421 II is totally worthy; while I prefer my 421n that's as much to do with mojo as sound.
I love omni's, and invite you to look at the "sleeper vocal mic" thread for mine and other's comments about various dynamics.
Old AKG mic's are a trip - IMO, often over-engineered works of visual art.
EV's almost always rock, and the various N/D mic's are cool.
I really like the Beta 58 for live rehearsals - terrific rejection and good sound.
Finally, one of my fave amp mic's lately is the venerable Shure 545.

Mine:
SM7b
421 (x3)
RE20
Beta 52
D112
SM57
EV 635a
When I'm not using my vintage U87 or KM84s, it's more than likely one of these.

Stedman N90 should fill your LD dynamic needs. Nice proximity effect and rolls the highs off a bit. Sorta "ribbon-like" response if you can believe that.
You got a Senn MD409, so find the little siblings...MD402 - 408. I have a pair of 406's that are the most awesome tom and guitar cab mics I've ever used. There's also a stereo version, and a gooseneck version, and maybe an omni... Basically just buy any Sennheiser MD 40x that you find is what I'm saying...

The Beyer M88 has been on my list for a long time along with a 201. I have a few Audix mics which I think are fantastic. I regularly use a D1 on snare, D6 for kick or low toms, and an i5 on guitar cabs. I've got a pair of 57s, the Raven, and the 421 U5 that I use on every project. The Raven is a great acoustic mic. I pair it with a LDC and blend to taste(in stereo sometimes). Some great suggestions so far. I have a Sennheiser 412 that looks like a small 421 with a built in stand. It's been on loan to a friend for voice over work but it's a cool little mic and I've never seen another. Gonna look for 406 and 408 also!

Dynamics are great. I love the old EV stuff. I've got a couple cool AKG D1000 and a D119es. Every one here is probably sick of hearing me expound the virtues of the M88, but it really is my favorite mic. M201, TGX50 and M380 are super cool too. AT ATM23he and ATM25 are also great mics. I rarely track drums without 421s on toms and for that last couple years the e602 in the BD.
I even wrote an article on dynamics for "Trust me I'm a scientist"

I'm a big fan of the AKG d100e, I absolutely love it on guitars and vocals, I was recently watching some youtube Jimi Hendrix and he was using one... that's fun.
There are a lot of fun old omnis that are kind of gritty. I use an old Turner 251 base station mic that I rewired to get rid of the switch as a drum crotch mic all the time, it's got such a nice gritty punch to it.
I've always been fond of Altec and EV mics too.
