I'm a filthy sinner
I sometimes smoke around my gear... I know this is bad but I really don't know how it affects things... anyone know specifically?

It used to make my bedroom all dirty brown and sticky. I never smoked in my studio so I can only tell you what it did to my bedroom paint and especially the window AC unit. Sticky and brown and brown dust or buildup on everything including the TV screen. My old Dell PC from back when I smoked turned yellow real quick too. Oh and it makes stuff stink also. No offense, I used to smoke so I understand. Just pointing out realities. Why not use the new electronic cigs around your gear at least. It's probably kind of bad but I'll bet it a lot better than real smoke. And yes pot smoke is just as bad or worse.

The acids and chemicals left in the smoke, get deposited onto everything the smoke can get into, which means everything in the studio.
These chemicals and acids will slowly eat away at everything they touch, especially if it is heated up, or is conducting electricity, as that will slowly keep activating the nasty goop.
It is like a very slow motion electronics eating zombie.
You gear may last years without a fail, and then suddenly POOF! They will fail in completely unexpected ways.
Enjoy.

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Me too... Quitters never win, right?
Seriously though - Bring it outside. Or if you really feel the need to get a puff in here or there, grab an e-cig -- I keep one in here for long-ish sessions and it's really not too bad.

Gear? Who cares about gear? Have you seen what that stuff does to your LUNGS?Nick Sevilla wrote:The acids and chemicals left in the smoke, get deposited onto everything the smoke can get into, which means everything in the studio.

I personally don't smoke around my gear any longer, and haven't smoked inside my house for years.
Having said that though, people constantly argue that vintage/antiquated gear sounds so much better than the new boxes. Is it that the box is new? Or is it that the vintage gear was exposed to so much cigarette (and pot) smoke? Same goes for antique guitar amps, consoles, etc.
Hmmmmm

Got down to 4 or 5 a day on vacation in mexico last week. Watched (old and stressed) dude working the e-cig/whatever,and unhappy trophy wife workin the
guilt. Went up to pee,and then the familiar smell of LOTS of shitty weed.
He came down with me,but couldnt help wondering-it's a vacation, right?
YOUR time,too-right?
YES-SMOKE GETS IN EVERYTHINg
Are people paying you for your studio, and services?
CLEAN YOUR SHIT. GEAR WEARS OUT.
plan maintenance/upkeep in yer gear, and yer prices.
If Keith Richards/LemmyBrittany spears/charles manson /black flag shows up at your place at 2 am-would you read him the latest
health warning?
Or roll Tape?
That's what I thought.or hoped.

I just did a session where we smoked inside. It was the first time I smoked inside in years. It was the first time I'd smoked around my equipment.
It was horrible.
a 10 hour session in a smoke filled room is a horrible idea (the tracks sound great though!).
As soon as the session was done I scooped up my stuff and went back to the studio and started cleaning the gear and myself. I'll never do it again.
technically speaking - it's probably not too bad since it was common for 90 years, but there's tons of junk in that smoke - I don't want to think of that toxic film on mic capsules.
but yeah, worry more about yourself that the wires and metals.
