Itunes help
I have somehow made several duplicates of lots of songs in my itunes library. In order to preserve what is left of my sanity, I would like to trash my itunes library & re-load the songs I have on a separate hard drive. I tried trashing itunes & downloading a new version, but the duplicate songs are still there...but not on my music harddrive. I am open to suggestions...there are too many duplicates, numbering over one thousand & I do not have the time or patience to delete them one at a time.
Thanks to anyone who can steer me in the right direction.

you can select "show duplicates" in the file or tools menu. then just delete them, but always keep the files.
or you can can go into your iTunes music folder and trash the iTunes library file then start over. you can choose "add folder to library" in the file menu and just click in the music folder on your external HD. make sure you update the settings to add newly imported files to the same folder.

Make sure you don't have iTunes set to "Let iTunes manage your Library" or whatever its called - it WILL copy all files to your User's Music folder and make duplicates (Apple always knows better than you do ).
You can also right-click on the files in iTunes, and open them in Windows explorer - do this for one pair of duplicate tracks and see where each copy actually lives. This should shed some light on where the extra files preside.
If this was simply a result of that iTunes setting I mentioned above, you should be able to delete the iTunes folder in your user's Music folder. Delete all files in your iTunes Library (only delete them from the Library, NOT FROM DISK) - and then re-scan your main Music folder. Should fix you up...
Looks like ott0bot and I are on the same page
