iMac Noise in a Split Tracking/Control Room

Post by earth tones » Thu Apr 04, 2013 10:25 am

Are these new iMacs with i5/i7 CPUs quiet enough to have as a DAW host in combination tracking/control room? I was planning to go with a Mac Pro which can be wired at a distance (in a machine room) from the display monitors, but now I'm swinging toward the iMac. My only concern is whether or not fan noise will be an issue. Can any owners of the current models comment?

It will probably be just fine for a couple years, and then the hard drive will get a little noisier over time. I had a six year old iMac and it was pretty much silent when brand new, and merely very quiet when it finally died. The fan is really silent the whole time, it's the hard drive that gets louder as it ages.
