best resource for a non-drummer to learn to tune drums?

Post by kuene » Mon Apr 15, 2013 11:33 am

I have a kit I'm setting up to record some parts - but they need a serious tuning. Is there a good book, article, youtube videos, etc. for somebody musically inclined but clueless about drum tuning? I don't even know what ballpark to put the low toms or kick in. The snare I can somewhat figure out.

Any suggestions would be great.

Hire a local drummer to give you a lesson on drum tuning. I've done it for folks.

I just want to add to this that as a semi-drummer who is mostly a guitarist and sound guy, having a Drum Dial or Tama Tension Watch has made a big difference for me in terms of drum tuning. Right off the bat it helps with getting the tuning even all the way around the head, and also if you just want to keep a set of drums at their sweet spot you can quickly and easily get them tuned to where you want them. The first time I tuned a five piece kit to my satisfaction it took me an entire saturday. Now it's just 1/2 hour or less since I know where I'm going and getting there is a lot easier.
