Recording a band in a Submarine

Post by Shine Studios » Wed Jun 05, 2013 3:12 pm

Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but I recorded a band inside a WWII submarine for a field recording/video and thought I'd share it. Guitar tone is a mic about 10' down a torpedo tube, drums were tracked with 2 mics, then re-tracked with mics up an escape hatch.

Cheers!

That's very cool and unique. The song was a great choice for that treatment.

get a hammered sound from guitar or bass! http://www.stringhammer.com
hand-made version to raise money for manufacturing... kind of like kickstarter, but you get a fully functional item now

Not as vibey as the plane thing, but what is? I really liked the sound and feel of both tunes, even though indie-shmindy is usually not my thing. At all. Do these guys get crippling "red light fever" in a conventional recording studio?

Pretty cool. There's plenty of diffusion, I'd imagine the sub to sound pretty interesting. The band and song are interesting too.

I like it too, and want to know all the geek.
What Daw, what AD, pres, mics, and how it was tracked, live then OD's?

what does that even mean? you don't like their haircuts or something? it's just good rock music.

OK. Had to think about this for a second, cause genres are problematic, at best. But Wikipedia kinda nails it, I think...

"The term indie rock, derived from "independent," describes the small and relatively low-budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved." Etc. Etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_rock

I realized reading that, that I think I just, basically, prefer bigger budget, and/or less "creative/contrived" stuff. Four on the floor, with some discernible, direct lineage back to Africa. You say just "good rock music" and I think there needs to be an adjective of some sort near "rock" to accurately describe this. Not that there's anything wrong with that. There's no accounting for taste.

Perhaps, I could have left out the "schmindy," but I thought it would heighten the complement, if I clearly got across my usual disdain for the genre that I believe this falls into. I really liked this particular tune/recording/video/concept. I feel a reputable review should disclose the (always present) biases and background of the reviewer.

BTW - being too cool for genres is also a hallmark of indie-shmindy in my book.

i REALLY don't know what that means. but we can just drop it, we don't need to sidetrack the thread.
