Syncing 2 Layla24 units

Post by soul&folk » Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:49 pm

If any of you have synced 2 Layla24 cards/boxes, I'd appreciate some help.

I just attempted to set this up and I think I did it correctly but the manual is very terse and I'm not 100% certain.

Both breakout boxes are connected to a pci card (well actually one of them needed a bit of a trick. I bought a pcmcia slot to that goes into a pci slot and connected a layla pcmcia card that way)

I connected both to each other with the required bnc video-type cable, one to the word out and the other to the word in.

I opened up the control panel software and now I saw 2 panels!

I set one to internal and the other to word. (I actually have no idea which one of these panels is the one I wanted which way, but the software only allowed me one way so I guess I did it correctly)

I opened Reaper and went to the preferences/settings and I saw that there were now more channels to choose from than before I added the second Layla24! And when inserting a track all these new tracks now appear as well.

Here's the question: These new channels appear as a repeat of the first set. In other words It doesn't say channels 1-16. It says channels 1-8 and again channels 1-8. Same with the digital channels. I get digital 1 and digital 2 twice.

Is this the way it should appear? Can I now assume everything is synced?

I don't have experience with those specific boxes, but when I used to daisy chain two Presonus interfaces it showed up that way in the inputs in my DAW, rather than 1-24, so it sounds right to me!

I'm pretty sure you'll know right away if they aren't sync'd. (I assume you mean word clock) Clicks and pops and digital shmutziness all over the place. If you get clicks and pops try them in the other order. Likewise, sussing out which physical input is which software input might take some trial and error.

I have exactly this setup (well, except for the crazy PCMCIA thing, I'm surprised that works).

not at my recording computer right now, but that sounds right. Double check the naming - I think you will see it says a "2" somewhere in each of the naming scheme for the second set of inputs. Also, I think you can rename them anyway in Reaper.

I also vaguely recall that you can sync with spdif too, although I may be confusing that with other cards I've had.
