Where to get tape????????

I ask this every year or so....as my supply runs out...
I used to use Ampex/Quantegy456 1/2"...and then resorted to RMG911.......where can I get the equivalents? best deal? most reliable?........thank you!

I believe the equivalent to 456 in RMG's world is 911,
What is the equivalent to 456 in ATR?

ATR just makes one tape formula. Its high bias/output.

thank you Drumsound....and , embarassed by my ignorance...but would that make it like or unlike 456...and ...if my machine is adjusted for 456...would it ....be ok to use?....how would it be different ...if it would be...

ATR tape is not a 456 equivalent. 456 is +6 tape, ATR is +9. if you're machine can handle the higher levels, you can probably get better noise performance from the ATR. But you can totally get away with running +9 tape at lower (+6) levels, you just probably won't get all the benefits. it will also have different bias needs, although I think ATR claims their tape is especially tolerant of different bias levels.

for what it's worth, I prefer RMG 911

It would be more like GP9 or 499 or 996

This place is in Melbourne Australia CATS that I have ordered tape cassettes from over the phone and had no issues. It seems they have RMGI 1/2" in stock. They have an international number on the website. But I live in Melbourne so I do not know what the shipping costs are.

thanks to the awesome tapeop crowd for info and such. I'm trying one each of the RMG911 and the ATR....so's I can see w hat works for me. And I'm trying it from tapes.com ---so wish me luck.

I have been told that the formulation ATR makes is actually even higher than +9. +12 or something, I gotta check my sources...but the point is that it in no way resembles 456 whatsoever. Its good stuff, but I doubt there's a "stock" machine out there that can saturate it.
SM911 is probably where its at if you were using 456.
