Generator hum

Post by fat in the middle » Sun Nov 24, 2013 4:23 pm

Hey folks, just in the market to buy a 4 stroke generator for an off grid studio I am building. Anyone have experience about what is good to reduce hum from generators, or what is a good genny to buy? Yamaha, Honda?
cheers

The best way is to have a bank of car batteries with a high quality inverter. The batteries will act as a buffer for the Genny and it won't need to be running all the time either. How many watts do you calculate you will need?

I did something similar for a client who had a natural gas backup generator and wanted to run his audiophile/home theater rig off of it.

Use deep cycle batterys rather than car batterys tho...they are designed more for that use. And usean isolater to get rid of inverter hum. I havent done this recording but grew up off the grid...Out of poverty we did everything the wrong and hummy way :-)

This was common place for country folks prior to the REA days. I know both of my parents families used batteries for radio. I'll have to ask my dad how they charged them.
