Deduction on instruments

Post by goose134 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 7:12 pm

I'm looking to put a session together to record a tune and I'm trying to get it down as faithful to the original as possible. What I need is some critical listening to get what instruments I need to assemble for that to happen.

Track:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwwK7ueCrIM

I'm hearing 3 ( or more) trombones
bass, drums, piano, and probably a trumpet or two. The high instrument that sort of jumps in on the accents: is that a piccolo? or a flute? Sounds like a piccolo to me, but that's why I'm here.

Also I think I may be hearing some French horn in the middle of all that. Thoughts on this? This may belong in listening to others stuff, but I'll have a question on micing the brass later in the thread.

I'm hearing at least three trombones. I'm not hearing any french horns. If there are any trumpets, they're on flugelhorn. At least two flutes - doesn't sound like piccolo to me

It's probably a standard big band. A couple of the reeds are playing flutes, Some flugel horn instead of trumpet.

Its quite possible that the arrangement is or was available.

Oh. I came here to help clarify what asset class musical instruments are for the purposes of fixed asset depreciation for business tax purposes. And to warn about pitfalls of section 179 deductions. Oh well. :-)

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, Goober!

But, since you asked, yeah, it sounds like standard bb configuration with piano, bass, drums rhythm section, but nobody has mentioned the string section; was that a "given?" If not, I will go on record as hearing pretty prominent Creed Taylor-type strings.

All good. I don't even know what a flugel horn is so I'm going to Google that. I wasn't sure how to post what I was looking for, but a tax break would be nice!
