Can someone show me what a good drum recording sounds like?
Just looking for a wave file or mp3 of solo drums that sound professional and good. I'm just after something to compare to my own drum sound, to hear where it should be at.
thanks
thanks

Seriously though, I understand what you meant (I think), but I think you have to be more specific, because "good drums" is pretty subjective. You want a good drumset rhythm track, _solo'd_ (not a solo), that sounds ________???? ("contemporary," "vintage," "rock," "jazz," "reggae," "country," etc., etc.)... So much depends on style of music (and therefore production), and personal choices and aesthetics (from both drummer and engineer/producer). Maybe you could tell us what style of music you're working with, and a few examples of what _you_ think are "good drums," and let everybody have a hack at analyzing how to get those sounds(?). Asking for "good drums" will net you 1,000 different answers and opinions (and suggestions-- "always compress," "never compress," "close-mike everything," "only use stereo overheads," and so on).

Here's a recording I did a few years ago. I posted the drum mix to talk about ORTF overheads.

Cool this is kinda what I was looking for. I downloaded a few of them and can hear differences in my recordings vs theirs. Now to figure out how they got them that way...LupineSound wrote:http://www.reddit.com/r/SongStems/

Vaura - Drachma - Recorded and mixed by Colin Marston. Not isolated drums except for the beginning. This is what I think rock drums should sound like. Big, beefy, with a fair amount of room sound mixed in.

Jesus Lizard - Here Come Dudley - Recorded and mixed by Steve Albini. I like these for the same reasons as the other example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0MgbQHh-Xg

I'll see if I can find the track. It might be on my old computer, buried in a closet...drumsound wrote:Here's a recording I did a few years ago. I posted the drum mix to talk about ORTF overheads.
