Otari MX5050 8 SHD pinch roller problem

Post by creaturesleeper » Mon May 19, 2014 8:04 pm

I just picked this machine up...the pinch and guide rollers seem good however the the thing it pinchs onto on the right is either missing a piece or doesnt turn..the rubber roller pinches down against a solid pin and stops...Im assuming its missing a piece? Something that turns on the shaft?

The pinch roller pushes the tape against the capstan (that's the pin you mention). The capstan is driven by a motor and should be turning when the machine is on (even if you haven't hit play). If it's not turning you've got a problem with that motor or the circuit related to it . The 5050's can sometimes develop a problem with the verispeed control that will make the capstan stop running. A good tech will be able to sort it out for you.

Thanks I figured it out soon after I posted this...i freed it up and spins halfway around and stops...unfortunately I think a coil inside the capstan motor fell off...also known to happen I guess . Not cheap
