PCI-E controller cards?

Hey, All.

Are PCI-E controller cards for USB and FireWire still finicky? -- Meaning, do I need
to find models with a certain chipset, or is that not as pertinent as it used to be?

Still finicky to my knowledge, at least as far as Firewire goes.
