Halloween Theme & Tuesday's Gone

Two questions I've been meaning to ask for a while now.

1. In the Halloween theme song, are those wood blocks underneath the piano?

2. Is that unique sounding instrument in Tuesday's Gone (Skynrd) a synth sound?

If its a woodblock (which i probably is_ its pretty small and played with stick tips, not rubber mallets. Part of me wonders if it a subdivided metronome, to lock in the hihat and it was used in production for some reason.
