thanks Jim, that was kind of what I was thinking.
I took a class on console electronics a long time ago and when we got to the part about EQ it scared the daylights out of me. Basically we were told that no matter what kind of EQ you use, you are mangling your signal.
Ever since then I've wanted the most bare bones, least amount of nonsense mixer possible. I already have more mic pres than I will ever need to use at once. Though to be honest as I look at the better solutions to my quandary and the price soars, the budget mixers are looking more and more attractive.

I've never used one but it looks like the Tascam MM1 gets pretty close to your reqs. http://en.audiofanzine.com/analog-mixer/tascam/MM-1/

That look skind of cool in a lofi, found at a flea market kind of way. But nothing I'd want to plug all my gear into and say "this is my only mixer now".
I guess it really does just boil down to an X Desk or the MX508.

I ended up getting the X desk. Now I am always on the hunt for an Xpanda.

So I am trying to find a mixer or summing box that can do a couple things that I consider straight forward, but I have not been able to find?
Basically I just want a high density line mixer.
Like 16 or 24 inputs in one or two rack spaces.
I do need direct outs.
I do want a bit of gain, and pan/balance would be nice.
Finally, why not all connections on DB25?

I don't want a dozen aux sends, EQ, mic pres or AD/DA conversion.
I dont want a boat of a desk that takes up all my space.
I dont want busses and groups.

It seems like the SSL X desk is the only one that comes close, but it is actually larger than I would like, costs too much, and has features I don't think I'd really use. Looks like I should have bought one or two of those SSL Xpandas when they were on sale. Dang...
That describes my mixer, but mine's 10 channel.
