Lamenting the unavailability of 456

Post by honkyjonk » Tue Jul 08, 2014 4:04 pm

Oh 456, how I wish someone would bring you back. (The quantegy version that is, after the sticky shed issue was solved) I have quite a few reels that are of the quantegy era that exhibit no indication that they will be shedding any time soon. Even when brutalized on my Ampex transport.

And they saturate so so nice. Sm911 is pretty good tape, but I'd buy 456 again in a heartbeat if it was the same recipe from the quantegy days.

Just a lament in case some former quantegy execs are trolling messageboards trying to gauge interest before considering a re-boot. Yeah right.

Yeah, SM911 sheds like crazy on my JH-16... But it sounds so good! Couldn't be my machine though...;)

I have no idea if Quantegy is actually making tape or if they are just an online store now?I tried to order some 1" from them a couple years ago and never heard anything back from them until I complained that they charged my card without delivering a product?

We have to face the fact that Quantegy analog tape is dead. There's not enough recordists using tape to justify bringing it back.

I started kind of late in the tape game, been forced to use RMGI 468 because most of the time 911 is on back order. I'd love to hear what the 456 sounds like though.
