sure, I've heard that too. I had the A-designs P1's, sold them and got a Pacifica, then sold that and got the P1's again. I did it for the convenience of having the 500 modules. I never heard any noticeable difference in the P1 vs. the Pacifica. I know some golden-ears have said they do. I also know there is a difference in the gain of the P1 vs. Pacifica so maybe that's what they hear?Jim Williams wrote: One other opinion I hear all the time is the modules don't sound as good as their 19" rack sized versions. Several have tried them and sold them off for the full sized versions. I guess they're not for everyone.
I'd agree 500/rack may sound different... but better? nope. I think the P1's still sound great. But that's the only one I can really compare directly, and even then it's not a direct comparison because while the P1 is based on the Pacifica, its not the exact same. In fact I'm having a hard time thinking of a 500 module that has a directly comparable rackmount version.
There's the FiveFish SC1. Same circuit in both 500 and rack.
Otherwise I think many are constrained by the power supply design in the API 500 series so many only end up as "similar" to the rackmount version. But if they are designed properly instead of force-fit I think many 500 modules still sound great. I have several from A-Designs, an Avedis MA5, some Vintech 573's, an AML 5003D, OSA MP1 - all killer preamp channels really. Even the cheaper Golden Age 573's do a fine job.
