I LOVE this mic on multiple sources. I haven't found anything that it sounds bad on. It really shines on heavy guitar, but also sounds great on mandolin, tambourine and banjo and harmonica. It takes eq well too.

I'm presently mixing some stuff that used a stock R40 on female vocals.

A little compression, a little EQ, and it's working well.

It is a little dark, but that's why I picked a ribbon in the first place.

My recomend is to avoid cheap ribbons unless you have the tools, patience, and skill to re-tension the ribbon. It's challenging.

just spend the extra hundred and pic up a mic from Cascade
I've come to the same conclusion. I got a Fathead II last week

Definitely. I had an Apex 210 for a while and it made me wondered why anybody would use a ribbon mic for vocals, but when I pulled the Fathead out of the box and sang some lines into it, just to make sure it worked, I was like--oh...wow! Totally different experience.

I have an R144 and an R40, both modded with Edcor RMX-1 transformers. Now they are really good sounding. I agree they are pretty good stock as well.
Anyone that wants to mod these, check http://www.preservationsound.com/?p=3687

The R144 and R40 seem to be the same internally. The 144 has a chrome grill while the R40 is more brushed looking. The mod works the same for either. the R40 is a lot less but I really think they are the same. The internal wiring all the same colors for the mod.
