Daptone Guitar Tone

Post by mjt335 » Thu Apr 09, 2015 8:58 am

I'm loving the guitar tone on this track from Daptone. Anyone have any tips for getting this kind of sound? I'm talking about the guitar that's doubling the bass line here. It's super clean and has a really nice, bouncy quality to it.

I realize there a lot of factors involved, one of the biggest of which is the performance by the player (obviously), but just thought I'd see if anyone here has ever achieved similar sounds.

Sounds like maybe a full hollowbody with P90's?

To me, it sounds like that, DI'd thru a decent pre; I mean, to get that with my stuff I would try a Sheraton II into The Brick, mebbe, or something a little cleaner like a Summit ...

I'm totally guessing here but it seems like an old Sears-brand hollowbody (Harmony, Silvertone) through a Fender Princeton or an old Ampeg guitar amp.

It seems like the Daptone guy uses the same guitar every time I see 'em.

and a very good spare/sparce arrangement that lets the sound come through.

Any time I've seen any of the Daptone bands (Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley and the not Daptone but somewhat related Lee Fields) the guitar player is always playing a Harmony hollow-body. Different players but always more or less the same guitar. I'm not sure of the exact model (although it always looks like a nicer version of a Rocket) or whether it's vintage or a reissue . It's a thin hollowbody with 2 gold foil pickups.
No idea about the amp. Always seems like a twin but live is always a different situation.

On a slightly unrelated note the bass is always a beat up blond Gibson Ripper. I'd swear it's the same bass being sent out on tour with different bands but that would be crazy.
