Neve 8016 investigation

Post by m_france » Tue Sep 29, 2015 3:33 pm

I've been working with Jim Eno from the band Spoon to help him reconstruct the past of his Neve 8016 console. When we set out we knew the serial number of his board, A41, which we think dates it back to about 1970-71. From this knowledge I've been branching out to try and get as much information I can about the history of the console, however the main focus of my investigation has been finding who the console was originally built for, and if possible who was the Neve engineer who constructed it.

I figure it would be best to provide you with a short summary of my most relevant findings to date:

-Jim purchased the board from Mike Castoro, owner of Wunder Audio, who had acquired the board from a UK broker. (this is a path I am currently pursuing that I think has the most promise).

-The original Neve records were given to Derek Stoddart (1 of 5 original Neve engineers). I have been unable to find a way to contact him about the records, I've contacted several people who have since lost his contact information. From what I've been told he has retired to France.

-I have learned about the console following Jim's in production, serial A42. This console is an 8048 which now resides in Konk Studios in London. This console was acquired from AIR Studios where I believe it was originally installed. (I'm not sure that this information does much for me but I figure it's not totally irrelevant).

If someone has some knowledge of the board, a person I could contact, perhaps a lead I didn't look into enough, even if you'd just like to talk vintage Neve gear with me I'd be greatly appreciative!

Geoff Tanner at Aurora Audio might be able to help.

Hi m_france,

Sorry I can't be of help. But I do love these stories of tracking down the histories of audio gear. Let us know how you go!

Best of luck,
Nick

PS: I take it the console in Konk (ex-Air) isn't the original Konk console, right? i heard that one was parted out? I certainly saw a few modules, supposedly ex-Konk, for sale on ebay a few years back. Or am I wrong.... anyone?

Man, fuck. I was being serious. The guy must have some idea how to dig up info on old Neves.

The Konk 8048 is now at Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's studio in Jacksonville.

+1 about contacting Geoff Tanner.
